Fat Thursday: Carnival
In Barcelona it is possible to spend almost entire Carnival week eating: you start with an omelet contest in a market on Fat Thursday and continue with a dinner on Friday, a chocolate feast on Saturday, a workshop on the history of cooking on Monday, a sardine feast on Wednesday... The food is one of the main parts of the Carnival. High caloric meals are especially appreciated, with the presence of pork and eggs, 2 ingredients traditionally prohibited during the Lent. For a perfect holiday, BCN Apartment Rentals offers you the best luxury apartments in the heart of Barcelona, with the best design, location, security and comfort.
One of the most deeply rooted acts of Carnival in Barcelona the tortilla competitions, which are usually held on Fat Thursday. This year it will be held in the markets of Santa Caterina, Vall d'Hebron, Ciutat Meridiana, La Marina. In some neighborhoods they hold Carnival feasts, chocolate feats and collective meals that are assembled with contributions from around the world. There are also places where gastronomy combines with makeup workshops, concerts and performances. In Diagonal Mar and in Sarrià, the evening will end with botifarra (catalan sausage) feast.
In many places of Barcelona the burial of the sardine, or Ash Wednesday, ends with a communal dinner with lots of fish. In the neighborhoods of Sants, Clot and Sant Martí, where, after saying goodbye to His Majesty Carnival, will be held a sardine feast. If you want to mix traditional food and popular culture do not miss the Ash Wednesday of Les Corts, where the devils of the neighborhood give a fire show that ends with a sardine feast too.
The traditional cookbook is full of delicacies related to the Carnival: egg sausage, omelet, coca de llardons, greixoneres dolces, sardines... Formerly the Carnival was a moment of laxity and debauchery before the austerity of the Lent ,the period of 7 weeks of purification and abstinence marked by the Catholic religion. Formerly, between the Carnival and the Easter the believers made abstinence and followed a strict diet during which meat and eggs were forbidden. On the other hand, the Lent is also identified with a series of delicacies. During all these weeks, the salted cod is the star dish and, surely for that reason, it is said that in Catalonia there are more than 100 different recipes for it. Another typical Carnival dish is "buñuelos": now they can always be found in the bakeries, but before they were sold only on Wednesdays and Fridays.
